Why Form a PAC: The basis for forming a PAC is to combine resources to strengthen relationships with the legislature and effectively promote the philosophies held by a PAC.
How Does It Work: There are numerous regulations governing how a PAC operates and its relationship to the parent association. In brief, however, PPAT establishes the PAC and operates it although many of the activities related to operation must be maintained and performed separately from the association’s regular activities.
How Is It Funded: PACs are funded by individuals and corporations which have an interest in supporting the philosophies of a PAC. The PPAT PAC supports legislators or political candidates who advocate for initiatives and public policy reform which result in quality, dependable, and cost-efficient services for individuals with developmental disabilities.
Administrative/Corporate Funds vs. Political Funds
Any corporation may contribute dollars to fund the administrative/corporate operations of a PAC. These contributions in turn can be used to hire a lobbyist, pay for office space, utilities, phones/faxes, etc. These funds may not be used for political reasons.
Only individuals may contribute dollars to fund this component. These
contributions in turn can be used to make political contributions, host
fund-raisers, pay salaries of employees, purchase supplies for use in
operating the PAC, and solicitation of contributions. In brief, any
expenditures related to political activity must be paid for with these
funds. |
